The Ireland pavilion T


he Ireland pavilion, designed by the Office of Public Works Architectural Services has been one of the highlights of the Shanghai Expo with queues of visitors each day. Occupying a site of 3,000 square meters,


the contemporary glass structure contains 13 galleries, a temporary exhibition centre, a courtyard performance plaza and a hospitality suite for business and promotional use. The construction of the OPW designed pavilion was supervised by Henry J Lyons, an Irish architectural company that opened an office in Shanghai in 2006. The project consultant for the pavilion was SIP Project Management in Shanghai and the Design Company was SEEDRI (Shanghai Electronic Engineering Design & Research Institute). The World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is expected to attract the largest ever international audience with over 70 million visitors before closing on October 31st, 2010. China Daily, the largest circulation English language newspaper, has already recommended that their readers visit the Irish and German pavilions for a ‘once in a life-time’ experience’. Indeed the Irish contribution has been widely praised and continues to be ranked in the top 10 pavilions at the event.
