11. Ireland’s foremost playwright and writer Samuel Beckett’s works have toured the world. His 1955 play Waiting for Godot is generally regarded as a masterpiece of modern drama and a turning point in 20th century theatre. It has been staged several times at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, by domestic and overseas companies. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.
