This is a very special occasion for every country involved in the World Expo in Shanghai and I offer a warm Irish welcome to all visitors to Ireland’s Pavilion. I am looking forward very much to my own visit to Expo. The sheer scale of Expo in Shanghai is ambitious and awe inspiring, for it is the largest in world history with
some 192 national participants and an anticipated 70 million visitors. For the people of Ireland, Expo provides a very welcome opportunity to showcase to the world what we are, who we are and what we do best. And where better to do so then than here in China, one of the world’s most important and infl uential economies, and especially in Shanghai one of the world’s most welcoming and exciting cities. We look forward to using the great platform of World Expo to further grow and develop the commercial, cultural, educational, tourism and civic links which we enjoy with the people of China. On this great occasion I congratulate the Shanghai People’s Municipal Government and Cork City Council
for the development of their Sister City Agreement. In the fi ve years since it began it has brought many benefi ts to both cities in the spheres of business, arts and culture, tourism, education and city government. I am sure it will bring many more in the years to come. In Ireland we attach great signifi cance to the Expo theme of “Better City Better Life” for the people of our
green and beautiful island are anxious to ensure that the planning and development of our urban areas is the best we can make it. I congratulate everyone associated with World Expo in Shanghai and the Irish Pavilion, which already in its
fi rst weeks has proven to be a very popular success. Please enjoy the experience of Ireland and the welcome offered at the Irish Pavilion.
