9. Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Frank McCourt, best known as the author of his memoir Angela’s Ashes in 1996, which was subsequently made into a movie with Angelica Huston and Robert Carlyle. He received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1996 and also authored ‘Tis (1999) and Teacher Man (2005). He died in 2009.
10. Nobel Laureate, poet and writer Seamus Heaney is widely considered to be the most important Irish poet since WB Yeats. Born in Northern Ireland much of his work is infl uenced by his upbringing and life in Ireland – however his infl uence on contemporary poetry is immense. His books make up two-thirds of the sales of living poets in Britain and Ireland. His seminal epic Beowulf is a translation of the hero Beowulf’s battles with three monsters.
11. New York-based Colum McCann received the 2009 National Book Award for Let the Great World Spin which was hailed as: “The fi rst great 9/11 novel” – by Esquire Magazine and: “One of the most electric, profound
novels...in years” – by the New York Times.
