The Creative Spark

A strong history of literature and a vibrant visual arts scene has ensured that Ireland continues to shine on the world stage winning many international awards.

I

rish writers are deserved winners of many prizes at major international literature competitions. Oliver Goldsmith (author of the 1766 novel The Vicar of Wakefield) shone through and led the way for such greats as Oscar Wilde. Ireland has produced

many writers of world repute including Jonathan Swift (author of the famous 1726 satire Gulliver’s Travels), George Bernard Shaw and James Joyce. Bram Stoker, the author of the influential Gothic horror Dracula (1897), also came from Ireland. The contemporary literature scene is also thriving: New York based Irish novelist

Colum McCann was awarded the Fiction Prize in the US National Book Awards 2009 for his novel Let the Great World Spin. Other major international prizes were awarded to Irish writers in recent years including John Banville, Sebastian Barry, Anne Enright, Seamus Heaney, Roddy Doyle and Colm Tóibín. Chinese translations of popular fiction writers such as Marian Keyes, Cecilia Ahern and Maeve Binchy continue to grace the shelves of bookshops in China. Ireland also has a hugely diverse range of talented artists, sculptors and craftspeople.

During the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, a strong indigenous tradition of painting emerged, including such figures as Jack B Yeats (brother of WB Yeats), William Orpen and John Butler Yeats (father of Jack and WB Yeats). Some of Ireland’s best known living artists include Louis le Brocquy, a figurative painter and print maker, Seán Scully an abstract expressionist who lives and works in New York, Patrick Scott, the venerable abstract artist who is best known for his geometric “gold paintings”, Robert Ballagh, whose hyper-real style is strongly influenced by pop art, Dorothy Cross, the sculptor and filmmaker, Martin Mooney the expressive painter, Graham Knuttel, the figurative painter and James Coleman, the installation and video artist.
