学者之国 A centre of learning
Education and learning is highly valued in Ireland with a strong history dating from the mediaeval monastic centres and the ‘hedge schools’ of the 17th – 19th centuries, to the schools and colleges of today.
E
ducation is one of the most important bonds between Ireland and China. There is a strong tradition of collaboration between the third level education sector and educational
companies in Ireland and China. Many Irish universities and institutes of technology now have joint programmes with their Chinese third level counterparts. Both China and Ireland have historically recognised the vital
role that education and learning plays in building a skilled workforce for future economic growth. Young people in Ireland now have one of the highest educational attainments in the OECD; some forty per cent of Irish 25 to 34-year-olds have a third level education. The quality of the Irish education system is a major contributing factor to the rapid rate of economic growth Ireland has experienced over the last few decades. Ireland has one of the best education systems in the world according to the World Economic Forum’s 2009-2010 Global Competitiveness Report which ranked the quality of Ireland’s secondary and tertiary educational system, as assessed by the business community, as eight out of 133 economies. Ireland’s Institutes of Technology have been developing partnerships with Chinese Higher Education Institutions for over 10 years, resulting in formal signed agreements between Institutions. These partnerships cover the delivery of Irish undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Chinese Institutions as well as the joint delivery of such programmes. In addition, Chinese students can undertake part of their studies at Irish Institutions and students from Irish Institutes spend time at leading Chinese universities.
