rom the great national sports of hurling and Gaelic football to world-class rugby, Ireland enjoys a wide range of sports. Golf is a major attraction for visitors to Ireland with beautiful
and challenging links courses and world-class scenic courses in stunning locations. In 2006 Ireland hosted the Ryder Cup at the five star K Club hotel and resort, which was also home to the PGA European Open for more than a decade. Irish golfers continue to impress at international tournaments with Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke being joined by rising stars such as Rory McIlroy. The ladies golf tournament, the Solheim Cup, will be hosted by Ireland in 2012. Horse racing is almost a national pastime with great trainers
and jockeys at the helm of a world-class bloodstock industry. Internationally renowned stud farms in Ireland include the world famous Coolmore, home of sires ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ and ‘Sadler’s Wells’. The Irish National Stud is at the heart of the bloodstock industry in Ireland. In sailing, Green Dragon was the Chinese/Irish entry in the
2009 Volvo Round-the-World Ocean Race. Arriving in Galway harbour on the west coast of Ireland, she was greeted by thousands of Irish supporters, a fireworks display and 500 Chinese drummers. It was a heroes’ welcome for an heroic Chinese-Irish venture and testament to the ever-closer ties between China and Ireland. Other great champions of Irish sport include rugby player Brian
O’Driscoll, footballers Roy Keane and the legendary George Best, athlete Sonia O’Sullivan, jockey Ruby Walsh, snooker players Ken Doherty and Dennis Taylor, and cyclists Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche.
