Dramatic storytelling

Irish people love the cinema and see more movies per capita than any other country in Europe. Irish-made films won twenty prestigious prizes internationally in 2009 alone.

Saving Private Ryan, Michael Collins and more recently Harry Potter, PS I Love You, Becoming Jane, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and the HBO TV series The Tudors. Up-coming international productions include the major TV series Game of Thrones and Camelot. Ireland can also claim to have produced some of the world’s foremost playwrights

A

including Oliver Goldsmith, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett. Modern playwrights such as Brian Friel, Peter Sheridan and Conor McPherson are also attracting wide international acclaim and their plays are performed on stages across the world. The Irish animation sector is flourishing with hundreds of people now employed in this

multi-million euro industry. The sector is characterised by a large number of independent studios with more than fifty Irish companies working in the industry. These include dedicated animation companies, post production houses, flash content developers, mobile content developers, advertising production companies and television/film production companies that are developing animation projects. Ireland has a strong third level educational and training infrastructure for animation including Ballyfermot College and the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology turning out award-winning practitioners on a yearly basis. Five graduates from Ballyfermot College’s Irish School of Animation received Oscar nominations for the 2010 Academy Awards. Two Irish animation companies have also been recognised with Academy Award nominations including Kilkenny based Cartoon Saloon who received a nomination in the Animated Feature Film category for The Secret of Kells and Brown Bag Films nominated in the Short Animation category for their production, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty. Other Irish companies that are internationally recognised include Galway based Telegael which won an Emmy Award for their production Tutenstein and Boulder Media, one of Ireland’s largest productions houses, is behind some of today’s most popular and successful shows such as the Emmy nominated “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends”. Success has not been unique to just these Irish companies – our growing animation businesses have great potential and are key innovators in the industry.
