UNIT 2 POETRY AND SONG Focus on ... rhythm Rhythm is the way beats are arranged in a poem or song.
Rhythm gives poetry and songs a beat or sense of timing. It is easier to feel a rhythm than see it written down – this is why it is so important to listen to poetry being read out loud and to practise reading it out loud yourself.
Rhythm can affect the speed or pace of a poem or song. Rhythm can also affect the feeling or mood of a poem or song.
In this song, The Beatles create a regular rhythm. The rhythm quickens and reflects the upbeat mood of the song.
Form small groups of three or four. One person should read ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ out loud. The rest of the group should take turns gently tapping the beat of the song as they listen.
