Poetry is a form of writing that often evokes an emotional response. Poets use carefully chosen words and arrange them in a certain way to create a particular meaning, sound or rhythm. Poems are often described as ‘paintings in words’. They are usually arranged in groups of lines known as stanzas or verses.
In First Year you will learn at least 10 poems. Although some will share a similar theme, each poem is unique. Remember, a poem can have many possible meanings and you should interpret the poem in a personal way. Ask yourself, ‘what does this poem mean to me?’
Throughout this unit you will learn several new poems in various styles. You will become familiar with many of the techniques and devices that poets use to get their message across. You will also encounter a selection of songs in this unit. Poems and songs share many similarities. Both poets and songwriters use poetic devices and create memorable sound effects. Look out for the Focus on ... boxes, which are used every time you are introduced to a new poetic technique or device. When you see these boxes, be sure to add the defi nition to the glossary on pages 1–2 of your Portfolio.
