KINGDOM 1
Introduction Welcome to Kingdom 1 – Junior Cycle English for First Year.
This book and its accompanying title for Second and Third Year English, Kingdom 2, complete the Kingdom series.
Kingdom 1 features genre-based units which act as the foundation of learning for Junior Cycle English. Through such genre-based study, students will develop a strong understanding of the various forms of texts they will encounter and create throughout the three years of Junior Cycle, as well as the important features of these texts. The genre-based units are:
1. Writing With Purpose 2. Poetry and Song 3. Fiction 4. Stage and Screen 5. Media and Advertising
A broad variety of material allows mixing and matching of old favourites with fresh, new and exciting texts to suit the skills and interests of the class and refl ect their experience of the world. Students will write, research, construct and deliver speeches, work together, debate, create storyboards, listen to documentaries and advertisements and read and perform a variety of poems and extracts as they journey through their First Year course.
The 3 ups answering technique offers students a simple and effective method for answering questions.
Formative and summative assessments have been carefully designed to develop skills linked explicitly to the subset of 22 First Year Learning Outcomes and refl ect how the course is assessed. Many of the extracts throughout the textbook are springboards for grammar and language-based learning, while other tasks encourage students to refl ect on, discuss or write about their own studied texts. The Kingdom 1 Portfolio provides a well-scaffolded approach to some of the tasks where students are asked to be creative. Such question and answer templates are in line with the style and demands of the fi nal examination. Students are also given opportunities to draft and redraft with success criteria provided as a guide for improvement.
Kingdom 1 ends with a suggested ‘mini theme’ focusing on relationships that offers students an opportunity to connect their learning through the study of a broad, unifying theme in preparation for thematic study in Kingdom 2.
Kingdom 2 follows a thematic approach. Nine fully developed, exam-style themes are explored using texts from the fi ve genres with which students have become familiar throughout Kingdom 1.
