Formulation Summit 2021: Advancing in a new age

Over the past 18 months, the global COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on every area of society, driving a shift in consumer behaviours and facilitating new ways of doing business. As the world quickly adapts to the ‘new normal’, the cosmetics and personal care industry, which is recognised for its innovation, driven by science, has had to reassess consumer needs and respond by reshaping itself to meet all-new trends and priorities. from cosmetic manufacturers and ingredient suppliers understand the most pertinent sustainability and wellbeing trends that are influencing the beauty industry today and in the future, the In-Cosmetics Formulation Summit returns from 29-30 November 2021, taking place in London. The first In-Cosmetics event to return in a


physical format since the start of the pandemic, this will bring together leading international experts from across the globe over the course of two days, with a total of 23 sessions along with dedicated breaks for networking with exhibitors, peers, and globally renowned speakers and experts.

The summit’s high-level scientific


programme will focus on four main themes: neuroscientists, sustainability, cosmetic claims, and the pandemic and consumer behaviour. It will delve into the various aspects of ‘good’ science, that can enable formulators to create products that are fantastic for both consumers’ well-being and the planet, discussing everything from raw material shortages to safety regulations around hygiene products.


COVID & consumer behaviour On day one, delegates will have the opportunity to dive into how the pandemic has created a shift in the industry as well as within consumer behaviours. From soap to sanitisers, consumer demand


for germ-busting ‘hero’ products skyrocketed due to the pandemic, leaving startling gaps in the supply chain. Mary Lord, former president of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists in the UK & Ireland, will open the programme with a talk discussing what has happened during the pandemic and how it will shape the cosmetic industry for years to come.


Exploring the effect of the pandemic on


consumers, Samantha Dover, global beauty and personal care analyst at Mintel will follow next, highlighting how beauty and grooming priorities have shifted. She will highlight how, as keeping up appearances has become less important, consumers have embraced a more natural aesthetic, forming all-new beauty and grooming habits.


The session as a whole will also highlight that,


while a return to normality will renew demand for categories that struggled during the pandemic, a significant proportion of consumers intend to maintain their new beauty and grooming habits once COVID-19 is no longer a concern. This is creating some all-new habit-forming trends. Day One will also welcome Mauro Bleve, R&D


division lead at Laboratorios Maverick, who will reflect on how cosmetic manufacturers were quickly called to provide their expertise and production capacity to answer the global emergency and to deal with an increased demand for disinfectants. The session will highlight the challenges


facing formulators as they quickly bring new products to market and the importance of efficacy and safety along with the disastrous
