Figure 1: Silica as a styling aid This novel type of dry shampoos, such

as compacted products and no-rinse foam formulations, are highly effective, thanks to a reduced solid powder content. The packaging of the final product is more sustainable, and only the necessary amount of powder needed for the desired effect is dispensed. Hence itching and irritated skin can be avoided when the product is applied. Formulations containing spherical hydrated

silica provide volume in a natural style. Hair is left refreshed and volumised without any of the dryness or itchiness commonly associated with traditional dry shampoo formulations, while time-consuming brushing is avoided as well. Dry shampoos containing spherical hydrated silica have reduced powder content, while still providing volume and styling benefits for special occasions.

Applications Spherical hydrated silica’s unique properties mean that it can be used in a wide range of other personal care products, from hair care products such as styling powders over emulsions to decorative products. As a functional additive, it improves the look and feel of cosmetic products. It is also a bio-friendly alternative to microplastics in rinse-off and leave-on formulations. Synthetic amorphous silica is a versatile

additive that can be used in various formulations. Different formulations can be created for different applications to cover different reduction water consumption approaches, such as sticks, bars and powders for cleansing products, and high concentrates, which contain less water than non- concentrated products, for skin care products. As a smart ingredient, spherical hydrated

silica is nature-identical and conforms with organic and natural cosmetics. Once the formulation is rinsed off, it is not harmful to aquatic environments or wastewater plants, it simply joins the geological cycle of minerals.

It can be used in water-free or low-water formulations, as well as in formulations that reduce water consumption. Silica-containing cosmetics are user-friendly

and convenient to use. The skin feels less sticky and the silica provides a matte finish. In hair products, formulations absorb excess oil without leaving excess powder or an itchy feeling. The spherical particles reduce the tackiness of products on the skin. For consumers, spherical hydrated silica is a natural product, which does not compromise performance.

Lifestyle & personal care products For consumers, the phrase ‘personal care’ has expanded to mean so much more than just skincare, hair care and beauty. Personal care stands for taking time for ourselves, being conscious of our impact on the environment, enjoying the time we spend with our friends and family, and taking pride in work. Personal care products need to represent this.

They need to feel good on application and not leave an itchy or tacky feel. Their impact on the environment needs to be minimal, considering water usage, product source and packaging. Sustainable products need to perform to support eco-conscious consumers. When consumers are focused on work, family or friends, hair styling products need to perform so that users can feel comfortable from morning and evening. Small changes in daily habits quickly

build to have a larger impact. Reducing water consumption is a priority but when comfort and style are compromised, old habits and ways are easy to fall back into. Consumers need to be convinced that sustainability and natural products do not mean a compromise on performance. Once small habits are established, changes

expand into other areas of life. Walking to do errands, cycling to work, and using public

transport to travel are made more convenient and more appealing when personal style is not compromised. Consumers feel ready for anything even after a long train ride, a quick cycle, or a walk on a warm day from the bus stop. Consumers are not only concerned about

their water usage but also the water used during the production of the product or formulation. The development of waterless, low water-usage and liquid-free formulations is becoming more and more visible in personal health care. Consumers are trying to find easy and convenient ways to reduce their impact on the environment. Consumers are looking for smart solutions

that can be used every day and dry shampoos are gaining acceptance as a part of a daily routine. However, the demands on multi- functional products are increasing. Busy lifestyles with increased travel and shorter periods between meetings, appointments, and activities mean dry shampoos need to perform more than their traditional use. Dry shampoos need to refresh hair removing

any excess sebum and restore volume without the need to wash the hair. Spherical hydrated silica absorbs excess oil from hair to restore the hair’s natural style and volume without drying it out. Daily showers can be avoided. Short runs or trips to the gym can be even quicker. Travelling becomes easier and more convenient. As more people look to save water in various

ways, comfort, and convenience does not need to be compromised. Showers do not need to be coordinated with important meetings, sports, or social occasions. Hair is left feeling refreshed and consumers are confident that the product performs. Spherical hydrated silica has vegan and

cruelty-free labels. More than that, its low environmental impact means that it delivers on sustainability and allows consumers to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
