Welcome to the June issue of Personal Care Global magazine. It was good to meet many of you at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists Suppliers’ Day trade show last month. During the show, I had
the privilege of chairing the World of Chemistry education programme session during which there was a fascinating presentation by Provital global trends manager Anna Balaguer. This was a real tour de force by Anna, who
shared with delegates the hottest trends in cosmetics noted during her global scouting missions. Of these, Asian trends were the most
intriguing, including the rise of what Anna called ‘surgical dupes’ – products that aim to achieve similar skin care benefits as clinical procedures. These include Glutathione Melting Film and
Glutathione Mist Ampoule, both marketed by K-beauty brand Dermafirm. The former is composed of 950,000ppm
STEP COMMUNICATIONS
(95%) collagen and 50,000ppm (5%) pure glutathione, while the mist is formulated with 1,000ppm (1%) glutathione along with vitamin C & tocopherol. These high concentration products were a key
theme of Anna’s presentation, which noted a trend for Asian products with very high concentration of exfoliating ingredients, such as AHA/BHA. Other trends noted by Anna were the rising
popularity of ‘milky’ formulations as well as strong demand for foam/mousse type products. Anna also showed how consumer knowledge
of the skin barrier has seen it become a skin care product category in its own right. The June issue of Personal Care Global
focuses on two main topics: skin care and naturals, with additional articles covering sun care, hair care and the skin microbiome. This month’s interview is with Michael Haspel,
global vice president of personal & home care at Clariant. Mike talks about Clariant’s strategy, the
