Taking the long road to success

Tim Probert – Editor, Personal Care Global

Parand Salmassinia is president of personal care at DSM-Firmenich. With close to 30 years of experience in the beauty industry, and originally from Persia, Parand talks to editor Tim Probert about her journey to become global head for one of the world’s personal care ingredient suppliers, as well as her aspirations in her role at the newly merged organisation

Tim Probert (TP): You have been President of personal care at DSM-Firmenich since January 2023. How have you found it? Parand Salmassinia (PS): Very interesting! I have been in the personal care business all my life and I love it. For me, it’s much more than skin deep. It’s about the proven results

of our science, the true wellbeing PERSONAL CARE January 2024

and holistic beauty solutions, the responsible sustainable practices, the regulatory, and the clear understanding of consumers’ needs. I have the fortune of coming

into this role as DSM and Firmenich are merging. Everything is changing and

new, which is a unique opportunity for us to have a blank canvas and build together a whole new world

with a unique in-depth expertise on innovation, creativity and imagination from both houses’ talents.

TP: How has the merger changed things for DSM legacy? PS): It gives us a home in a new one-of-a-kind business unit (Perfumery & Beauty), where we are using our unique ‘category of one’ capabilities to shape the future together with our customers, offering superior science with proven benefits, while having a positive impact on people and planet. Our personal care solutions, including UV filters, skincare, and haircare solutions, bring beauty, wellbeing, and health to the forefront of daily life.

TP: What does the merger mean for the offering to the market in terms of ingredients? PS: It means that in DSM- Firmenich, our customers have that unique business partner, with true global scope, that could seamlessly build holistic wellbeing solutions integrating both, high performing personal care

ingredient with an exceptional fragrance experience. This is what we call ‘our

category of one’ unique capabilities. In terms of the ingredients, the solutions, and the business models, there’s a lot of things that we are discovering together. We are asking ourselves questions like, are there products in our personal care portfolio that can help with the stabilisation of fragrances? What are the perfumery

ingredients or technologies that can enhance our personal care ingredients experience for the end consumer? Can we draw inspiration

from the olfactive universe into skin solutions? Our future and opportunity to build synergies together is truly exciting!

TP: Is it fully a merger or more of a marriage? PS: There is a lot of heritage coming from both, DSM and Firmenich legacy companies. But what unities us is the common values, our interest to collaborate together, our ambition to shape
