Brazil’s Central Bank lacks betting authority Legislation Representatives of the Central Bank participated in a hearing at the Senate's CPI for Sports Betting, which is studying measures against the over indebtedness of bettors and investigating irregular sites and the possible links between betting and organised crime. According to the President of the Central Bank, Gabriel Galípolo, the monetary authority does not have the legal powers to prevent the use of funds from Bolsa Família and the Continuous Cash Benefit for betting. As reported by Radio Senado, Galípolo clarified that

oversight and enforcement concerning the regulation of the betting sector fall exclusively under the purview of the Ministry of Finance. Tis includes the regulation of payment institutions that serve betting sites. He noted that in order for the Central Bank to have the authority to impose fines or to halt activities that contravene betting regulations, legislative amendments would be necessary.
