Game Sequels
Te most important thing when building these game families is to stay true to the essence of what Rainbow Riches represents. We recognise that there are thousands of players who love the original games, like Pots of Gold and Pick 'n' Mix. Tat is the challenge we face: how to bring the leprechaun into new environments or introduce new mechanics while maintaining fidelity to the original.
How are the creative considerations for a Huff n' Puff sequel different from a legacy series like Rainbow Riches? Is the risk of experimentation more significant?
From my perspective, the key factor is how deeply the brand is embedded within its player base. If you are at the very beginning of your journey, you need to be cautious about how you approach the mechanics and establish the essence of the game itself. For instance, with a brand like Rainbow Riches, which has been around for 20 years, we have significant flexibility because we possess a large portfolio of games. We have more leeway to experiment, as there is only so much you can do with the older titles.
On the other hand, for something like Huff n' Puff, which is still in its early stages, it is crucial to focus on building the brand and developing the intellectual property. In this case, refining the mechanics in the market is more important than extensive experimentation. Everything follows a cycle: the more you embed the brand and introduce new games, the further you can push the boundaries. Establishing the brand at the start and ensuring players understand the game is vital. Once the brand is well-established, you can then transition into a phase of greater experimentation.
Ultimately, what is the purpose of a Light & Wonder game sequel – maintaining legacy appeal with existing players or attracting broader market interest?
We operate in a creative industry, so we always strive to innovate and keep things moving. We do not want our projects to end up sitting on the shelf and gathering dust. With games, the shelf life is decreasing; after three months, it is crucial to
maintain player engagement. Tis makes the need to create sequels and keep our content, intellectual property, and brand in the minds of players even more important.
At the beginning of our journey, our goal is to establish the brand. We believe we have a great concept and a strong intellectual property. We want to ensure we stay at the forefront of players' attention. Additionally, it is essential for our studio and creative teams to be challenged to evolve the mechanics, story, and narrative of our games. When we get this right, players truly connect with our content and support us. Tis is the mindset we adopt when thinking about game families.
What is next in the expansion of Rainbow Riches?
We have big plans for Rainbow Riches! We will begin celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the brand this year and continue those celebrations into 2026! We are launching a revival series that goes back to the original games and creates a new series from them. We will be focusing on two iconic bonus rounds: the Road to Riches and the Pot of Gold bonus rounds. Over the next 12 months, we plan to release approximately nine new games.
You will be seeing the leprechaun character a lot more throughout the year. Our goal is to pay homage to the original series while also making it appealing to modern players and introducing new audiences to the Rainbow Riches experience, especially those who may not be familiar with the original game. We are really excited about this for Rainbow Riches, and we expect to kick off the revival series around Q3 of this year. So, watch this space!
