MALIBU CANTINA A space originally developed with a Wolfgang Puck restaurant in mind, Malibu Cantina has been through its fair share of changes during the two and half-year run up to its completion. Situated on the same plot as the Nobu restaurant on Malibu beachfront, the space has been developed into much more of a multi-purpose venue with restaurant, bar, and live music capabilities and remains the private use of owner and entrepreneur Larry Ellison until a suitable operator is found. “This was an interesting project for us as there were a lot of directional changes over the two and a half years,” said Ken Okajima, President of Okajima Group, the installation company that worked on the restaurant. “We normally like to work with the end in mind but with this project it wasn’t possible. We did, however work with the architect Severine Tatangelo of Studio PCH from the very beginning. She was very easy to work with and communicated clearly as the changes came, and they came often.” As mentioned, the space had been intended for a Wolfgang Puck restaurant and so Ken initially specifi ed a different brand of loudspeakers for the project. However as the venue’s purpose changed so did the equipment he chose to specify as he explained to mondo*dr: “We try to make the process as easy as possible when working with our customers and so look to offer an entry- level, mid-level and high-end level range of loudspeakers,” said Ken. “So we’ll specify certain types of loudspeakers depending on the venue’s requirements. We decided to go with Tannoy in the end for this particular venue as the sound system needed to be high spec. I love the way Tannoy loudpeakers sound - I’ve used them in recording studios I’ve built prior to the Malibu Cantina restaurant so I’m familiar with them and they’re easy for me to tune.” As Malibu Cantina is in a residential area, right on the beachfront, the placement of the loudspeakers was of particular importance for this project, as Ken went on to explain: “The Cantina is nestled in probably one of the most beautiful places on earth but it’s residents are very concerned about noise levels. When they heard that the space might be turned into a club rather than just a restaurant, it naturally raised a tonne of concern so we had to make sure the outdoor loudspeakers were placed as close to the building as possible.” For the ground fl oor patio areas, Ken used eight Tannoy Di5 DCt surface mounted loudspeakers, while the fi rst fl oor patio has two Tannoy CVS6 surface mounted loudspeakers, and the fi rst fl oor outdoor seating area uses four Tannoy CMS401DCe surface mounted loudspeakers. “They’re all directional loudspeakers,” said Ken. “Surface mounted so that we can position them downwards and keep the noise from going out into the surrounding area. The system has the potential to be loud but we’ve put limiters on it so that it sounds as good as it can, without exceeding any noise problems we might have with the neighbours.” The internal design of the building also brought with it a number of challenges for Ken and his team as he explained: “Originally we were looking to install the Tannoy CMS801 loudspeakers but

we had to adjust the size to the CMS601’s because of the fl oor to ceiling spacing and because Baswaphon insulation foam had been used. As well as this, the main stairwell was a concern as essentially it created a big, open hole in the middle of the restaurant. It’s a huge staircase that goes from the bar to open areas upstairs and it made me wonder why the Baswaphon insulation was being used; I believe it was thought that by using this product it would minimise footsteps or serving noise, or any kind of noise on the second fl oor down to the fi rst fl oor, which in fairness it probably does.” Inside the building, it was decided that there should be the option for live music in the restaurant area and so Ken and his team took the original background system they had designed for the Wolfgang Puck restaurant and added another layer to it. “In the control room we have three Crown amplifi ers - one CTs8200, one CTs4200 and a CDi1000 while processing is taken care of by a Biamp AudiaFLEX NC digital signal processor,” said Ken. “For the live music area we have used a Presonus Studio Live 16.0.2 mixing desk, which can be controlled remotely by an iPad. Four Tannoy VXP-12 self-powered loudspeakers have been hung from the ceiling, two in the main dining area and two in the bar; we also have a Shure ULDX24 microphone wireless system.” In the main bar area there are also two Tannoy CMS601 DC PI in- ceiling loudspeakers, which are position closest to the windows and four Tannoy CMS601 DC BM in-ceiling loudspeakers positioned around the bar, as well as two Tannoy iW62TS in-wall subwoofers. While the dining area on the ground fl oor has a total of 10 Tannoy CMS601 DC BM in-ceiling loudspeakers - eight in the main dining area and two in the private dining area. “The space is empty at the moment but I am confi dent that the positioning of the loudspeakers and the system we’ve installed will allow for these changes and give the operator what they want,” said Ken. “Everything is separately controlled and zoned and there is a tonne of control and assignment potential, but most of the investment has gone into the loudspeakers and amplifi ers as we were told the sound needed to be high end and sound great for both background and live music.” Another factor that had to be considered when installing the system is that all the fl oors are wood and all the ‘walls’ facing the beach are fl oor to ceiling glass panels. “It’s a very ambient sound and the wood and glass does have an effect on the end result but you would get this no matter what the venue,” continued Ken. “We have the ability to set up presets so the sound is tuned for when the glass doors are closed and when they’re open. The manager will have a selector for this, but we have to wait until the operator decides exactly what they want to do. “I think the main point about this project is, we always tell our clients it’s not about being loud with your sound - it’s about clarity and if you don’t have clarity then you have to turn it up loud to hear. But if you have clear sound, and I’m not just talking about high frequency, but intelligible sound that has been properly selected for the space and so on, you can get away with really good sound rather than high volume. This is the key selling point for Tannoy - the loudspeakers allow us to do just that.”
