ERGO ARENA AND ENTERTAINMENT HALL

Laying between Gdansk to the south and Gdynia in the north is the lesser known resort city of Sopot on the Baltic coast. Here the Ergo Arena and Entertainment Hall (EAEH) has taken the seemingly perfected sports arena design up anoth- er notch. “In the way of other such buildings the Ergo Arena can accommodate almost all the indoor sports to world championship standard,” said Piotr Jankiewicz from Konsbud-Audio who installed the arena’s sound system. Fortunately the challenges of the audio system have also been anticipated by the architects - KIPP Projekt of Poland - as Piotr explained: “This is a maximum 15,000 capacity arena for standing events, so it’s in the ‘large arena’ league. To ensure that even the biggest concert spectaculars will be able to play here they didn’t just look at rigging and truck access; they have even addressed the acous- tics; for a big room it’s remarkably dry thanks to treatment on the underside of the roof structure. That meant we at Konsbud had to treat our approach to sound reinforcement with equal vigour; this wasn’t just a background music system for the hockey games, it would need to be very powerful in terms of sonic capability, and


yet be of the highest quality with regard to intelligibility and musical fidelity.” Konsbud was also asked to provide a voice evacuation system (EVAC) within the Ergo complex. Piotr said: “We specified a loudspeaker system from d&b audio- technik to fulfil the audio demands. They meet all the legal criteria from the tender document and we find the various ranges of loudspeaker systems from d&b to be so well matched sonically, that to pick and mix various propagation pattern charac- teristics to suit different areas of these two large rooms solves every problem and creates none.” Konsbud chose elements from the d&b Qi, Ci and E-Series, and presented the Polish Building Research Institute with a proposal to integrate the d&b system as part of the EVAC. “We modelled the system using d&b’s extremely accurate Array- Calc software to ensure it conformed to EU regulations, so we were confident in our plan. We even received a very positive approval to our proposals from the Chief of the Province’s Fire Brigade based in Gdansk,” concluded Piotr. www.dbaudio.com


EVERBANK FIELD

Since opening in 1995, EverBank Field has been the home of the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars and host to NCAA Football’s Gator Bowl. However, over the course of 17 years time took its toll on the Jaguars’ den and recently the 84,000-seat stadium underwent significant renovations, including an upgrade of the sound system with Harman’s JBL VLA line arrays. EverBank Field’s management company Spectacor Management Group (SMG) hired Christopher ‘Topper’ Sowden, Principal Consultant of Sowden and Associates in Fort Worth, Texas, to design and oversee the installation of the new audio system. The system was installed by locally owned Florida Sound Engineering Company. “Considering that EverBank Field is a large, open and relatively shallow oval, we agreed that a distributed line array approach would provide a noticeable enhance- ment to the fans’ audio experience in the bowl,” said Christopher. Eight of the 12 originally designed arrays have been installed with the remaining

four scheduled for completion later in 2013. Each of the four speaker clusters on the sides of the stadium includes three VLA Series VLA601-WRX loudspeakers and one VLA901-WRX loudspeaker, along with two PD Series PD5212/64-WRX loudspeakers and one PD5212/95-WRX loudspeaker. The four end zone clusters each feature three VLA Series VLA601-WRX loudspeakers, one VLA901-WRX loudspeaker, with one PD5212/64-WRX and one PD5212/95-WRX loudspeaker. In this configuration, the VLA provides high energy and increased low and high frequency response, all the way to the front row of the stands, with even coverage to all seating areas. “The arrays were developed using a road show rigging concept that allowed their installation using either a 150-ft crane or two chain motors,” Christopher noted. “Each cluster only took about an hour to mount.” Christopher pointed out: “Because the lighting structures are forward from the upper deck rear seating rows, we covered that area with 32 JBL AM7212/26- WRX high-power two-way speakers on poles behind the last row of seats, which we chose because of their extremely wide horizontal angle of coverage. We also installed 52 JBL AW295 speakers below the edge of the upper deck to cover areas of the lower deck that were shadowed from the main system. www.jblpro.com
