The ETC Selador Classic Vivid-R fi xtures highlight the bar areas
The six metre by six metre grid is evident in the structure of the building
was colour, Ruud continued: “There are a lot of LEDs on the market - RGB, RGB with white or amber - but these fi xtures have seven colours, RGB plus amber, cyan, indigo and red-orange emitters. The Selador fi xtures make much nicer pastel colours too.” The house lighting system has been designed using a six metre by six metre grid, which is a fairly standard measurement for a lot of new buildings, and at Ziggo Dome it was derived from the architect’s plan. The foundation pillars used to hold the building in place require a structure and everything else follows accordingly. To provide coverage for the six metre by six metre grid a wide beam angle was required and there are not many LED products available that are capable of such specifi cations. However, ETC’s distributor in The Netherlands, LightCo was able to provide the fi xtures specifi cally for Ziggo Dome with 100º lenses. Had a different fi xture been chosen, up to four fi xtures per six metre by six metre square would have been required to achieve optimal coverage, but with the ETC LED fi xtures just one per square was more than effi cient. This selection reduced the amount of installation work for LightCo too, which was an advantage. A second wave of customisation involved ETC Selador Classic Vivid-R fi xtures, which are located in the foyer, bars, lounges and VIP section. Bas van Schelven, Sales Manager at LightCo explained: “The Selador Classics are equipped with RJ45 in and out instead of XLRs. We were able to do all the DMX cabling with standard Cat 5 or Cat 6 cables and standard connectors, so all the cabling is standard.” Marc Kocks, MD of LightCo added: “Before we customised the Seladors we tested DMX going over RJ45 connectors using Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables because it’s quite a challenge and some people say it actually can’t be done. Before we routed the whole system we tested the system with 20 fi xtures in one loop using RJ45 connectors and a particular Cat 5 cable with a particular length so we could see if the system was well equipped to use the DMX signals or not.” The system gives the staff at Ziggo Dome the ability to control the fi xtures from touchscreen panels that are located at various postions around the arena. The panels can be customised with different layouts and can also supply the sACN control over the network to the ETC Net3 four port DMX gateways to supply DMX to the fi xtures without the need for extra processing. ETC’s Field Service Engineer, Tom McGuire explained how the panels work: “The system is made up of 10 ETC Unison Mosaic Tessera controllers. Each has its own control of an area but some of the controllers have overall control too. Each of the controllers

has 11 pre-programmed presets or a colour picker to set a different colour, which can be the same throughout the building or can be individually set depending on the controller being used.” The system gives members of staff a certain level of authority when it comes to controlling the lighting. The bar staff for example, are able to turn the ETC Selador fi xtures on and off in the bar area, but Ruud has full control over the entire system and even has remote access so he can log into the system off-site. The more complicated control came with the programming of the ETC Desires in the arena space. The control needed to provide simple on and off functions, and also split the seating area into sections so a particular area could be turned on or off as required. When a show is taking place at Ziggo Dome the lighting engineer can come into the venue and take full control of the house light system, using effects from a lighting console if it is so desired. Bas concluded: “Ziggo Dome has had good reviews because for the scale it feels intimate. Without journalists realising how this works, it is actually a lot to do with the lights.”
