RIALTO THEATRE
THE RIALTO THEATRE IN MONTREAL WAS BUILT ALMOST A CENTURY AGO, BUT WAS FORCED TO CLOSE IN THE EARLY ‘90s. IT HAS NOW BEEN BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE BY AN INJECTION OF PASSION AND A CRAVING FOR HIGH CLASS AUDIO AND LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY.

With roots dating back to 1923, Neo-baroque-style architecture and Louis XVI inspired interior, it’s not difficult to see why the Rialto Theatre is often described as one of the most iconic buildings in Montreal, Canada. Despite its magnificent charm, the building ceased operation as a cinema in 1990.
Many attempts to convert the building took place in the years that followed, but each one failed, so in 2010 the decision was made to sell the building. It was purchased by Le Groupe Merveilles, a com- pany which planned to restore the building to its former glory days, a notion that was well received by the Rialto Theatre community. To bring the theatre up to date for the 21st century, Le Groupe Merveilles wanted to create an adaptable space suitable for a wide variety of performing arts applications. The revived Rialto Theatre is

able to accommodate 708 people in standing mode, 450 people in theatre row seating and 350 in cabaret style seating, while the newly renovated balcony can seat a further 429 people. The re-opening was aimed at emerging artists of the Montreal area, looking to showcase their work in the ‘Mile End’ neighbourhood. ‘Mile End’ - where the Rialto Theatre is located - is littered with art galleries, designers’ workshops, boutiques and cafés and is populat- ed by a number of artists, musicians, writers, and filmmakers, making it quite a sought after area.
After renting in audio and lighting technology on a show by show basis since its relaunch, the Rialto Theatre decided it was time to invest in its own system in order to realise its full potential. Co-Tech- nical Director at the Rialto Theatre, Drew Malamud explained: “We wanted to make an investment that would last a long time for both the audio and lighting systems. The goal was to do it right from the start so that we would be able to use and enjoy the systems for years to come.”
