One of the main acoustic challenges was providing an optimal envi- ronment for simultaneous activity in a tight building without mutual disturbance. The sound insulation measures include ‘box-in-box’ isolated constructions, for example, to separate the main music auditorium space from the bar, and also the recording room and the recording control room. Working closely with Gareth Hoskins Architects, Arup achieved a well-received acoustic in the main space without recourse to extensive, and expensive, special acoustic treatments, cost-effectively using theatrical masking as sound absorption. Rob continued: “One of the opening reviews commented on the excellent sound separation between the cinema and the main performance space.” Arup worked with three specialist contractors on the project. Audio Light Systems, based in Edinburgh were the main sound and lighting installer, Northern Light installed the infrastructure and Future Projections fi tted the cinema systems. The interaction was traditional, but the journey times and cost to reach Shetland from the UK mainland meant that more interaction than normal was done at a distance. The fi rst events were held following handover of the building in August 2012. An offi cial opening program of events was staged later in the year over the weekend of 16 -18 November 2012.


The main auditorium has a standing capacity of 600 and seating ca- pacity of 330. A comprehensive selection of lighting fi xtures includes Martin Professional MAC 300 and MAC 500 automated moving heads, Selecon Aurora Cyc fi xtures, Selecon SPX zoom spots, ETC Source Four fresnels and Thomas PAR64’s. Dimming is via ETC Sensor racks which also control the house lighting fi xtures via an ETC Unison system. The lighting console is an Avolites Pearl Expert. Head of Production at Mareel, Iain Waddell commented: “Both the SPXs and the Auroras seemed the ideal choice. Key to the purchase decision were factors such as effi ciency, in terms of energy and labour, excellent light output, ease of use, fl exibility, and of course safety. vide a training ground for aspiring young technicians. After testing the various fi xtures, Selecon luminaires were the obvious fi xture of choice and we are delighted with the outcome.”


Northern Light, the Edinburgh-based, stage lighting, sound and audio visual systems installer provided the specialist design and installation of wiring and containment across the whole building to enable the lighting, sound, communications, paging and production cabling to operate as planned. The scope of work included the supply, instal- lation and connection of all the production lighting distribution and control cabling, as well as the supply and installation of all the sound, communications, paging and production network cabling. In addition, the company installed the ETC Sensor dimming racks and the work- ing light control cabling. Finally, Northern Light designed, supplied and installed wiring containment within both cinemas and contain- ment within the main auditorium. Colin Cuthbert, Managing Director of Northern Light, commented: “The extensive experience of the Northern Light team in designing and installing cabling infrastructure systems for professional theatres made us an obvious choice to help bring the vision for Mareel to fruition. With the bulk of our work taking place in England, Wales and Ireland it was great to work on such an important project on our home turf. Mareel promises to provide the Shetland Isles with a fantastic new arts centre, offering an extremely varied programme of fi lm, live music and other performances.” Stage Electrics supplied the main lighting, intercoms and other as- pects of staging. Business Development Manager, Ian Green, added: “The SPX and Aurora lamps were an obvious choice as they deliver up to 63% more light than an equivalent fi xture, with up to 27% more effi ciency. In addition, Selecon’s cool touch technology - where the plastic on the front and back stays cool - ensures that the lumi- naires are easy for technicians to handle and reset without getting burned. This is essential for a venue where technicians will come from all sorts of backgrounds, professional and amateur, and where a large part of the venue’s remit is training and education.”
