nature of the space. A L-C-R system was implemented at DCPH as this provides options for sound imaging depending on the type of show taking place at any given time. Mark Holden continued: “It is not uncommon to use only the centre and front-fill components for simple voice lift, and only the left / right for low-level playback that has a wide image but does not need to have a strong sense of acoustic placement in the space.” The PA consists of a central line array made up of d&b audiotechnik Ti-10L cabinets, while the left and right arrays comprise Fulcrum DX-1265 coaxial loudspeakers at the top of the cluster and Fulcrum DX-1295 bi-amplified loudspeakers at the bottom end. Fulcrum US212 double 12-inch subwoofers also feature on each side of the stage and seven Fulcrum CX-5D speakers are embedded in the front of the stage for front fill. A further five CX-5Ds have been installed as under-balcony fill speakers. Jaffe Holden’s Mark Turpin, AV Designer on the project said: “The d&b centre array provides smooth vertical and horizontal coverage that matches the room geometry well - the sound covers most of the room width without putting too much energy into the reverberant side walls. The side balcony geometry at DCPH, on the other hand, limited us to a point-and-shoot box solution for left / right loudspeakers, and this geometry also means the loudspeakers play very close to some seats. Both of these conditions led us to the Fulcrum product, which provides both excellent pattern control - critical in a highly reverberant space - as well as the smooth near-field response of a well-designed coaxial driver.”

range loudspeakers and two Fulcrum DX1595 3-way loudspeakers available should a particular production require them. They can be used as monitors, sidefills or directional effect speakers. A single Ful- crum CX896 left and right of the stage are also in place for onstage announcements or monitors. Rob said: “I know Fulcrum is a relatively new kid on the block, they’ve only been around for a few years but they are pretty punchy. Everyone walks in and says ‘oh your speakers are pretty small’ and then they hear them and they’re like ‘oh they’re really loud for their size’.”

Lab.gruppen C Series amplifiers power the Fulcrum loudspeakers at DCPH. “We’re really happy with the performance of the Lab. gruppen amplifiers, I think they are almost becoming standard over here,” explained Rob. However, the d&b audiotechnik central cluster is powered by its own propriety control platform. “d&b provides some integrated processing for its cabinets through its own controller and amplifier packages, so the one place where we did vary from the norm - of trying to stay with a single amplifier manufacturer - was the d&b D6 controllers that we used for the d&b central array,” commented Mark Turpin.

A Symetrix Symnet processing system is used extensively for the auxiliary systems and when required it is extended for FOH process- ing too. “Since Fulcrum Acoustic has very good FIR filter sets for its cabinets written for the Symetrix products, this allowed us to stay with a single processing platform throughout at DCPH,” explained Mark. In terms of longevity using multiple processor platforms with one system will simplify the signal flow and will enable maintenance updates to take place quickly and easily.
