Yamaha will send out a strong message to the industry that will reinforce Equipson’s identity.

JUAN JOSE VILA EQUIPSON VP OF PRODUCT & MARKETING

How did you fi rst get into the business? I joined Equipson in 2001 after working for INDRA and Lucent Technologies. Joining Equipson was a great opportunity for me to come back home to Valencia and work for the company that my father founded. He gave me the objective of assembling a team that could design and develop products for the entertainment industry, which we’ve been doing until this day. I’ve grown up with the industry; my father took me on business trips with him when I was younger and I was frequently in and around backstage areas learning to use the industry’s key equipment.

How have you seen Equipson change and develop? The company has evolved over the past 10 years, primarily through focusing on its R&D capacity, improving its image as a manufacturer and reducing its product range by specialising in the commercial audio, light control and lifters divisions. We have also collaborated with several local universities to establish our future product base.

What has been Equipson’s biggest achievement? We are now able to develop large, innovative projects. We’ve been working extensively over the past few years to build a competitive team that specialises in acoustic development, and investments in technologies such as our anechoic chamber, which has put our team at the forefront of innovation.

Spain has been one of the countries hit hardest by the recession, how has Equipson been affected? The Spanish market is obviously very important for our company. It is our home country where we work with our own sales team distributing well-known brands. Thankfully Equipson is largely focused on export so we haven’t been highly affected. In fact, we have made investments during the recession that have doubled our warehouse capacity. Ultimately we want to be prepared with an effi cient business structure that will give us an advanced position in Spain and in other markets once the global economy recovers.

Equipson manufactures audio and lighting products, as well as a number of accessories, how does it stay competitive? Our business structure is key. We have created several project teams that are independently managed in order for them to employ strategies that can be adapted to each project. The team tasked with managing the most innovative, technology-based products work solely within their designated roles, which allows them to focus on product development from start to fi nish. This is very important to protect both the quality and integrity of products and the brand name itself.

How did the Yamaha agreement fi rst come about and what makes Equipson the ideal partner?

Yamaha was looking for a business partner in Europe that was able to produce a range of audio products for the contractor installation sector. With Equipson it found a dynamic company with a motivated team who were willing to take on the challenge.

What does the agreement mean for Equipson moving forward? It was a challenge that I believe will be benefi cial to us; the partnership has helped by improving our internal processes for dealing with big companies. It has also given our teams the opportunity to learn and develop their skills, as well as boosting our brand image and increasing business opportunities. Working with Yamaha will send out a strong message to the industry that will reinforce Equipson’s identity as a developer/manufacturer that businesses can trust.

If you weren’t working in this industry what do you like to think you’d be doing? I used to work in the communications sector and really enjoyed it. I’m a sports enthusiast and a technology freak, so if I had to decide on a different role it would be working within the sports electronics sector.

What was the last album or song you bought? I’m listening to bands I’ve not heard for a long time; Black Sabbath was the last addition to my playlist. You re-discover music you’ve not listened to in years and surprise yourself.
