METALIST STADIUM

Kharkiv sits in the east of Ukraine, close to the border with Russia. The second largest city in the country is home to the Metalist Stadium, which has been nick- named ‘spider’ because of the 24 roof supports that arch like spider’s legs from the bowl to the ground outside. The new architectural appearance is the result of an upgrade to the Kharkiv Arena, which was designed to not only make the venue viable for Euro 2012, but to create a modern, multi-functional sports complex and entertainment facility. The modernisation has touched all parts of the complex: the south grandstand was added, the eastern one was rebuilt, and the northern and western were reconstructed. In turn, the employees saved the facility’s objects that are monuments of architecture. The arena itself can hold 38,633-seated spec- tators. Kompeks-V, which represents MC² Audio and Bose in the Ukraine, took charge of the audio infrastructure at the stadium. Using Bose’s Modeler software, the company created a 3D model of the sports venue. That model was then used to pinpoint optimal speaker points. Using a computer-based 3D model of the acoustic space and advanced acoustic ray tracing algorithms, Modeler can be used to predict a sound system’s performance. It uses full STI prediction - a measure of speech transmission quality. The software takes into account the acoustic characteristics of building materials that were used during construction, and auto- matically takes into account the sound absorption coefficient. Other parameters, such as background noise are also fed into the model. Based on the calculations, a system of distributed clusters was decided on. These clusters come in five different formations and are used in differing volumes. The first cluster, which consists of three Bose LT MB24 subwoofers, has been used 22 times around the stadium, evenly spaced under the roof. Amplification for the system comes from a combi-

During 2009, work commenced on a massive reconstruction project that would see the Georg-Melches-Stadion in Essen replaced by a brand new complex renamed Stadion Essen. In the course of its construction, Stadion Essen has been equipped with a range of loudspeaker systems from German manufacturer Fohhn Audio with Düssel- dorf-based VR Interkom-Technik Von Ruden taking care of the installation. The new stadium’s two long grandstands have each been equipped with eight Fohhn Arc-Series AT-66 horn-loaded, high performance loudspeaker systems. Designed with stadium, arena and large venue use in mind, these loudspeakers have been selected for their ability to deliver excellent levels of speech intelligi- bility in difficult acoustic surroundings. Powering the systems in each grandstand are two Bittner 4X1400 amplifiers. In the first of two shorter grandstands, five Fohhn AT-66 loudspeakers have been installed, also powered by two Bittner 4X1400 amplifiers. A second grandstand - which is still under construction - is to be equipped with a similar technology combination. To control the systems, a Fohhn FC-9 digital DSP system controller has been installed, Designed for fixed installation use, the unit’s automatic calibration function and integral loudspeak- er management system guarantee ease of use, reliability and excellent sound quality. On the ground floor of the stadium’s main building is the Kulturfreunde 97A hospitality area. Here, four Fohhn Linea Series LX-150 line source loudspeakers have been selected for sound coverage. Equipped with four-inch high perfor- mance speakers and one-inch compression driver with Fohhn waveguide, the slender LX-150 is notable for its directional sound capabilities and clear repro- duction of speech and music, as well as for its ability to integrate unobtrusively into a range of architectural settings. A total of 16 Fohhn Arc-Series AT-061 loudspeakers have been selected for in- stallation in the Assindia VIP area on the first floor. The flowing shape and com- pact dimensions of these loudspeakers are complemented by powerful full range sound characteristics, specially designed with conference, AV and surround


applications in mind. As in the hospitality area, these systems have been teamed with three Fohhn XS-30 active subwoofers for additional bass coverage. Fohhn’s compact ceiling speaker range has also been pressed into action for installation in several areas of the stadium. Spectator boxes on the second floor have each been equipped with six Fohhn CS-08 horn-loaded, high output in-ceiling speakers, while other areas used by stadium announcers, police and other security services have each been equipped with four Fohhn compact two- way CS-04 systems. www.fohhn.com

All of the amplifiers and audio processing is taken care of by Bose Control Space ESP-88 processors that are situated in rooms located on the north, south, east and west stands. All of the audio signals are passed through a fibre optic CobraNet network.
