THE LENSIC

Following the restoration of the Lensic Theater in 2001, The Lensic Performing Arts Center (The Lensic) was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The original building dates back to 1931 and although at one stage there were talks of erecting a brand new arts venue, a group of dedicated individuals were so fond of the building’s unique charm that through gift funding from individuals, local businesses, the city and different foundations, the old structure was brought back to life. Since its revitalisation, The Lensic has received high praise as a live performance venue, however, Operations Director at The Lensic, Steph Smith said: “We’d become disenchanted with the muddiness, lack of clarity, and poor distribution of our house system. This needed proper consideration; out of 821 seats the sound was marginal in 200 of them.”

structural challenges or difficulty with reflections, so the equipment choice at The Lensic was crucial. Steph continued: “We looked at proposals from several leading manufacturers and eventually arrived at d&b audiotechnik, and not without good reason. We’d had a visit from a touring production, k.d. lang that had a d&b audiotechnik system. It was much more extensive than anything we required, but it proved to us that d&b audiotechnik was where we wanted to go.” The system needed to be flexible enough to address a wide range of applications from rock ‘n’ roll concerts, to dramatic performances and educational lectures. It was necessary for the audio equipment to blend in with the aesthetics to protect the historic appearance of the auditorium and the room acoustics also had to be considered. The system was supplied and installed by Albuquerque-based AE Productions. South West Manager for the d&b audiotechnik US office, Joe DiFalco explained: “AE Productions is a very technically competent organisation, as it clearly demonstrated on this project. Although The Lensic had a clear idea of what was required, AE’s Project Leader David Buehler carefully guided them through the system design process. He demonstrated a clear understanding of our products and their application; more importantly he took on the
