ease of use. Dallas City Performance Hall is designed for a variety of art forms such as classical music, theatre, dance, popular music and lectures. The lighting system needed to accommodate these diverse lighting needs without being a labour or maintenance burden for this city-run facility.” Within the auditorium, Schuler Shook illuminated the upper ceiling with LED RGB washlights, while dimmable halogen wall-grazers were installed to add warmth to the room. The balcony edge railings in the auditorium also include colour-changing LED marker lights that allow the room to look fully customised for its surroundings. When the time came to specify theatrical lighting fi xtures, the design team looked to the industry standard, ETC Source Fours. In total there are 171 ETC Source Four profi les with various beam angles plus 10 ETC Source Four Zoom luminaires. These are located over the stage, in the FOH catwalks, the balcony rail and the box booms either side of the stage. Rob said of the decision to use ETC: “I’m glad we went with the Source Fours, they’re fantastic, they work forever, they don’t really break but if they do they are easy to fi x.” To complete the lighting rig a further 56 ETC Source Four Par Cans, 25 Selecon Arena 8 fresnels, 14 Selecon Aurora fi xtures and two Lycian M2 long throw followspots have been installed. For control and dimming, Schuler Shook once again looked to ETC. Kimberly Corbett of ASTC, said: “ETC was selected from several approved manufacturers for value and integrated system it provided, as well as its track record for service, reliability, and user training. The project included theatrical dimming, architectural dimming and processing, DMX-controlled relays, and pixel mapping and playback software for the LED curtain. All of these elements are connected through the lighting network and can be accessed from the control console or large touchscreens located in the control booth and backstage.”

ETC Eos and Ion consoles are used to control the theatrical lighting, while large ETC Unison Paradigm touchscreens for the architectural lighting control and an ETC Unison Mosaic system is in place to control the LED mesh curtain. Kimberly continued: “The Eos and Ion control consoles were selected because of their ability to scale to a particular production, whether pre-programmed or live, to integrate automated lighting and LED fi xtures with conventional fi xtures, and to accommodate potential future program expansion. Because both use the same syntax, operators familiar with one can easily move to the other.”

DCPH is also one of the fi rst installations in the US to incorporate ETC’s Sensor 3 dimmer racks, these were an upgrade from the orig- inally specifi ed SCR dimming racks, once again because technology had moved forward during the course of the building project. After a lengthy design, build and installation process there were high expectations for DCPH, it not only had to offer the local musical and theatre group something unique but it also had to blend in with the other entertainment houses within the Arts District. Rob concluded: “Our schedule has been busy since we opened so our biggest chal- lenge has been getting from event to event, which in the most part has been successful.”
