HAKKASAN With restaurants in the UK, USA, India and the Middle East, high- end Cantonese restaurant brand Hakkasan is synonymous with quality, whether it is the ingredients used to create the dishes, the plush interior furnishings, or the audio system. With this in mind, Tannoy has become the loudspeaker of choice, working with AVI-SPL globally on the installs in order to keep the consistency of high quality that Hakkasan is known for. mondo*dr visited one of Hakkasan’s most recent openings in Dubai and caught up with AVI-SPL Project Manager Phil Marlowe who completed the project. “The Dubai venue’s system was originally designed as a club but it was then realised that the system needed to be toned down as the venue is used more as a restaurant with an ultra lounge, than a club environment like some of the other Hakkasan venues are,” he said. “As we know, the biggest thing for Hakkasan is quality - they wanted the best of the best, they wanted a nice, warm sound that was evenly distributed. We’ve put a lot of loudspeakers and subwoofers in this restaurant, even the outdoor patio area has a lot going on. We have taken advantage of the CVS line of speakers from Tannoy in all the new venues we’ve been working on, as well the Di6DCt speaker.” Phil installed 54 Tannoy Di6 DCt loudspeakers throughout the

main dining area at Hakkasan, along with nine Tannoy VS15 BP subwoofers, three of which have been custom fi nished to match the décor. A combination of Tannoy CVS 6 loudspeakers, Tannoy VX 5.2 loudspeakers, and Tannoy VX 8 loudspeakers have also been installed in the main area, while the Lab.gruppen C Series of amplifi ers power the system throughout the restaurant. “Tannoy has been amazing at getting custom products made to our requests. The world class quality and excellent post-sales support is what drives me to use Tannoy and Lab.gruppen time and time again,” said Phil. With attention to detail high on the priority list, it was important that all the loudspeakers installed were de-badged and customised so that they would blend in with the furnishings and not detract from the overall feel of the restaurant. It was therefore essential that they were customised to match the colour of the ceiling as Phil explained: “Hakkasan restaurants all feature black walnut wooden ceilings and it was important that the loudspeakers blended into this and remained unseen, so we ordered from Tannoy unfi nished VS 15 BP subwoofers and then had the local contractor cover them with the same black walnut used throughout the restaurant. The loudspeakers blend in really well - you don’t even know they are there.”
