VENUE 059

LAVISH, LUXURIOUS, GLITZ AND GLAMOUR ARE JUST A FEW WORDS THAT SPRING TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF DUBAI... OVER THE NEXT FEW PAGES, YOU’LL FIND OUT WHY.

Private dining rooms are hugely popular in the Middle East and for Phil, this element made the Dubai project even more interesting as individual sound control was required for the various rooms and cornered off areas within the main dining area. A total of 14 Tannoy CM 601 DC BM loudspeakers have been used in the private dining areas and wine bar, along with two Tannoy CMS 801 subwoofers. “It depends on the culture as to how big the private dining rooms are, but the Middle East is very family orientated and the design is customised to fi t in with these needs. We have implemented individual sound control for the main dining area, the Ling Ling lounge, the bar, private dining rooms, and the outside patio,” he said. Another aspect of the project unique to the Dubai venue was the outdoor patio area, which has been designed to be in use almost all year round. The audio system in place features 12 Tannoy VS 10 BP loudspeakers, which were customised and weatherproofed. “You don’t realise the kind of temperatures the loudspeakers are going to be subjected to; it’s a learning curve and we found that maximum temperatures needed to be increased for use on the patio. All the grills have been upgraded to stainless steel and the plastics have been made out of a special material so they can withstand the heat. In terms of element protection we’re in good shape.” But the Dubai project was not without its challenges - such as the bar area with its narrow design, which meant Phil and his team had to get creative with the placement of the loudspeakers. “Luckily the VX12’s are very non intrusive,” he said, “there are four of them in the main bar area. They’re a good looking box and blended very well

with the aesthetics. The executive architect was extremely happy with the fi nal outcome.” “By all accounts, both within the company and from customers visiting the Dubai restaurant, we have had nothing but compliments on the quality of the sound system,” said Bruno Veninga, Design and Development - Projects, Hakkasan Ltd. “To stay true to the Hakkasan concept the sound had to be warm, full and powerful, yet unobtrusive and such that people could have a comfortable conversation - even at high volume. While this might seem contradictory Phil, and his AVI-SPL team have surpassed our expectations by driving the concept home with a beautiful solution engineered with a selection of Tannoy loudspeakers. All in all it is a beautiful solution to an intricate problem for a selective client.”
