084 VENUE

CASINO HELSINKI

HELSINKI, FINLAND EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA

The Fennia Salon at the Casino Helsinki in Finland offers guests a fi rst class dinner and entertainment experience all within an original 1920s setting. Casino Helsinki is the only international casino in the country and is operated by Finland’s Slot Machine Association with all of the funds collected through gaming directed at Finnish welfare services, such as funding for health and social welfare organisations and war veterans through the State Treasury.

As a building that is historically protected, when the time came to upgrade the lighting used in the cabaret space it was down to local installation company Starlike to rise to the challenge. “Because the building is protected we were not allowed to make any changes to the architecture,” said Starlike’s Pikku-Markku Tuominen. “We weren’t allowed to just hang lighting wherever we thought would be best, we had to work around it. The architecture is such a big part of the venue’s visual state that lighting design and planning is diffi cult and even the best of lighting designers would struggle to move the atmosphere away from the history of the building. One of the main challenges we faced with the refi t was the fact we couldn’t complete- ly block out natural lighting because of the skylight window in the ceiling.”

Starlike is well established in Finland, having been involved in numerous installations over the course of 30 years, and has worked with Casino Helsinki previously, so was well placed to carry out the upgrade. “When deciding which brands to use for the refi t we were at an advantage because we had worked on the previous system installed at the venue,” said Pikku-Markku. “We were sure that JB Lighting’s A8 LED wash moving head would meet the needs of the customer perfectly, so we chose to use 14 of these in total – fi ve on the stage backline, one either side of the stage, two above the subwoofer, and fi ve along the truss above the audience.” Joining the JB Lighting A8 LED wash moving heads on stage are six Robe Robin 300E Spot moving heads and four Martin Professional MAC 250 Krypton moving heads. There are also another two MAC 250s along the truss above the audience.

Around the peripheral of the room 25 ETC Source Four Jr Zoom theatrical profi le lights are hung and directed at the stage. Support lighting comes from 30 Multiform Multispot LS1310 LED lighting fi xtures; fi ve Showtec Sunstrip panels; 12 Eurolite Parnel 330W par cans; and 10 Eurolite T-56 Pinspot par cans; all placed at various points around the room. Added atmosphere is created with the use of haze machines from MDG and Unique. For lighting control, Starlike turned to MA Lighting’s Grand MA2 light console, supported by MA Lighting’s MA 2PortNode onPC PRO Ethernet to DMX converter and MA 2PortNode onPC programming
