078 VENUE

MILLA CLUB

munich, germany EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA

With a capacity of just 180, Milla is Munich’s most recent live venue offering - an intimate affair presenting its guests with a wide range of diverse and interesting acts from classical string quartets all the way to dub-step DJs. With such a broad range of acts set to fi ll the stage, it was crucial that the audio equipment installed could handle whatever might be thrown at it. “After I visited the club I knew a standard sound system wouldn’t do,” said Martin Schulze of installation company TC Showtechnik. “I had to put a lot of thought into it because the stage is quite narrow, the room is compact and the fl oor rises a bit - almost like in a cinema. To simply position a 12-inch box on the left and right of the stage was not enough - it would have killed everything. “Lectures are also planned to take place at Milla meaning speech intelligibility has to be good. So the system really needed to be able to handle everything and it needed power too. When you want to create a sound system for a club like Milla, the concept has to be a good one, which is why I specifi ed the Dynacord Dynacord TS 400 vertical array system.”

As is the case with many installations, the club’s size and design played a crucial role in the audio confi guration, as Martin explained: “I

am an audio guy fi rst and foremost but the overall visual impression is just as important. There would be no point in starting an installation thinking I am just there for the audio. It simply doesn’t look good if there is an act on stage with say, a violin and cello and then there are boxes either side of the stage taking away a sixth of the whole space.”

Martin and his team initially conducted measurements with two 15- inch subwoofers and two Dynacord TS 400 loudspeakers, but they weren’t totally happy with the mid-range. “A day later we received new FIR-fi lter presets, which were immediately played onto the Dynacord P64 Digital Audio Matrix Manager the new fi lters equaled out the room a little,” he said. “Generally though, the system was a well-rounded package from the beginning and I only had to change one aspect of the original offer. I had planned to use four Dynacord VL 62 loudspeakers as delay lines but because the room is quite narrow we found that two was enough. So the other two VL62s have been used as front fi lls. There are also four Dynacord PSE 215 subwoofers underneath the stage. “We decided against an active system because in a club there is al- ways a new situation that requires different controller settings.
