“We’re really happy with the performance of the Lab.gruppen amplifi ers, I think they are almost

becoming standard over here.”

Six years ago the original design called for an analogue mixing desk but as the build progressed so did technology, so a couple of years ago the specifi cation was changed to a digital console. A Yamaha M7CL-48 desk with 48 mono microphone / line inputs, four stereo inputs, and three mini-YGDAI card slots, equipping the console with a total of 56 mixing channels was chosen for the installation at DCPH. It was important for the console to be user friendly as many guest engineers will be working with it. The M7CL-48 also features 16 mix buses, a LCR bus, eight matrix channels, and eight DCAs that are assignable to 16 omni outputs, making it a very fl exible inter- face. Rob said: “I’m really glad that we have a digital board, with our schedule we are constantly going back and fourth, we’ll be doing a rehearsal for one show and then a performance of another so it’s re- ally useful to be able to save everything and then go back to it later.” Possibly the most striking lighting / visual element at DCPH is a unique LED mesh curtain designed by Schuler Shook and SOM backed by a black traveller curtain. The stage curtain is 60ft wide by 32ft high and is made up of more than 4,300 colour mixing LEDs that form a studded grid. Rather than a traditional theatrical curtain, which is often made of heavy weight material and absorbs the light, the idea behind the LED mesh curtain was to provide a canvas for visual art. The black traveller curtain is an important element of the design as it allows a LED curtain to operate as a programmable palette for electronic art, equipping DCPH with a rather spectacular and fl exible piece of scenery.

As well as commissioning and designing the LED mesh curtain, Schuler Shook was also in charge of the theatrical lighting. Jack P. Hagler, ASTC Partner at Schuler Shook said: “For theatrical lighting, it was important that the theatrical systems provide fl exibility and
