108 VENUE
There are two desks to take care of mixing capabilities at The Lensic, one digital and one analogue. The digital choice was a Yamaha M7CL console, while a Midas Venice is in place for mixing engineers who prefer to work on an analogue desk. The Yamaha M7CL is packed with features including a centralogic interface, dual power modes and a virtual effect and EQ rack, yet is an easy and intuitive console to use. The Midas Venice is a compact console equipped with high performance mic preamps, a responsive EQ platform and four audio subgroups. It’s simple outputs make the overall confi g- uration of this console quick and easy to use too. So essentially the choice between the two desks is sometimes dependent on the requirements of the show, but at times it is simply down to the indi- vidual engineer’s preference.
Although the audio system was upgraded recently, the lighting system has not undergone the same overhaul, it has been more of a gradual process over the past few years. Lighting Supervisor at The Lensic, Jeff Porter said: “As a road house, our decision to upgrade and expand is generally based on the overall technical requirements of the shows that pass through. As we see those specifi cations grow both numerically and technologically, we are called upon to meet those needs on our side, fi rstly through rental, but ultimately, as these things become standard, by purchasing our own equipment.” Part of the latest upgrade to the lighting inventory included the installation of 18 Wybron Cygnus MF200 LED fi xtures. The decision
to move towards LED technology was a fairly easy one as it offers greater colour selection and saturation for the many musical perfor- mances that take place at The Lensic. LEDs also drastically reduce power consumption and allow a number of dimmer channels to be vacated. The Wybron Cygnus MF200’s are spaced out in a back light system over the stage.
More than 300 ETC Source Four ellipsoidals are at home in The Lensic, they are spread out over the stage, on the FOH catwalk, the balcony rail, and in four box booms directed at the stage. While for any shows that might require intelligent moving lights, Jeff currently has two Martin Professional MAC 250 Krypton high performance profi le in stock. However, he is looking to expand the moving head range in the very near future and will be looking to Martin Profession- al, Vari-Lite, High End Systems and GLP, and testing the latest LED fi xtures each company has to offer.
The lighting desk at The Lensic is an ETC Eos 4000. Jeff said: “The decision to get a new lighting console came purely from a shift in industry standards, where more and more productions came through with shows formatted for Eos family software. “We are a primarily ETC house, we have ETC Sensor racks and an ETC Unison dimming system, an ETCNet lighting network, as well as the Source Four fi xtures. We’ve been very happy with its products, and so when the needs of our incoming shows dictated that we should upgrade our system, we chose to go with its current top of the line light board.” Although at fi rst it was a challenge to adjust to a new desk, it is now noticeable that the ETC Eos 4000 is a far supe- rior piece of equipment. Jeff feels is it more user-friendly and intuitive than the old console, not to mention that it works more smoothly with ETCNet lighting network and the intelligent lights. With an audio system set to see The Lensic through a good few years and the continual additions to the lighting system as technology develops, The Lensic will be welcoming performance after perfor- mance for many years to come.
