The Prut river flows from the Padurosi Carpathians (Ukraine), and Ceremusul is one of the main tributaries in the origin area. In Romania, the origin tributary is Izvorul Catelei (tributary of Ceremus). On the Romanian territory the Prut river has a length of 742 km. As a result of the climatic conditions in the upper basin and as the effect of the landforms peculiarities, the supply sources on the Ukraine terrirory cover about 70% of the annual flow volume. When entering Romania, the Prut river has a flow of 80 m3/s, and at the river mouth, when flowing in the Danube, the value of the flow is 90-95 m3/s. The river basin on the right of the Prut crosses, from north to south, the Saveni Hills, the Moldavian Hilly Plain, the Falciu Hills and the High Covurlui Plain. The river collects, on the right, the waters of a coded hydrographical network, including 248 water courses and a total length of 4,551km (1.9% of the total length of the coded network in Romania, and a density of 0.41 km/km2, as compared to the average value for the whole country, that is 0.33 km/km2). The reception basin on the right of the Prut river (in Romania) has an area of 10,990 km2 (4.6% of the surface of Romania). The forests cover an area of 1,085 km2 (9.9% of the area of the river basin and 1.7 % of the area covered with forests in Romania) (Atlas of Water Cadastre in Romania, 1992).
