THE DEMOGRAPHIC DYNAMICS OF SETTLEMENT SYSTEMS IN COSUSTEI HILLS

Daniel PEPTENATU, Cristian DRĂGHICI, Radu-Daniel PINTILII University of Bucharest

The analysis of the terriorial systems’ dinamics reveals the tight

connection between the demographic and economic components. The picture of the settlement systems, the different demographic evolutions are the direct consequence of several politics of economic development which leaded to the functional distribution of the geographic territory. The analisys of the demographic potential shows the settlements’

capacity for development and how the competition between them affected them. The settlements clasification in accordance with the human potential was made at two directions: the type of the demographic evolution and the cathegories of the demographic size.

The essential indicators of the inhabitant number evolution, the natural

movement and the migratory movement leaded to different evolutions in the wake of the censuses (1912-2002) in the studied area. We have identified 4 types of demographic evolutions: constantly positive multianual evolution, generally ascendant multianual sinuous evolution, generally descendant multianual sinuous evolution, constantly negative multianual evolution. Only two settlements had a constantly positive evolution, Comanda,

Jirov, in order to get closer to an urban center (Comanda to Strehaia and Jirov to Motru). The fortunate situation of Jirov village into the township made its population surpass/exceed the township’s capital, Corcova. For Comanda village the evolution is also determinated by the local development potential which is added to the urban surroundings effect. The less advantaged by the geographic position are the villages which

had a generally ascendant multianual evolution. Part of this category are several township capitals (Brosteni, Corcova, Floresti), due to the advantages of the geographic position and the administrative part, and several villages advantaged by the position towards the communication ways (Campu Mare, Ciochiuta, Croica, Ercea, Cordun etc.) which have determinated definitive movements towards those villages. Most of the settlements in Cosustei hills are part of those categories

which have as a main component/element the diminution of the inhabitant number (over 65%). The inhabitant number of several settlements has continuously diminuated, many of them being considered without any
