department and in 1963 scientific coordinator/researcher for doctor ship in Economic Geography, vice-chancellor in 1956-1972, he taught Geography courses at “Kosuth Layos” University in Debrecen (1970) as a guest. This ascension in academic hierarchy was the result of an assiduous,


passionate work, fulfilled with important scientific and practical contributions. He taught his students the following: “General Human Economic Geography”, “Human and Economic Romanian Geography”, “Political and Economic Ge- ography”, “The Economic World Geography”, “The Economic Romanian Ge- ography” and so on, inoculating the passion for Geography to many students, drawing their attention on this interesting field of human knowledge irrecov- erably, due to the scientific compelling content of his lectures, due to his aca- demic courses, his manuals and other scientific works which he wrote and published, but also due to his spontaneity and kindness, attributes which he has put forth in all circumstances. riched his lectures with significant latter data out of contemporary literature, his lectures being expressive, coherent, and the Geographical Literature be- ing very accurate; often, his lectures were accompanied by practical applica- tions on field and his seminars which had in view to develop capability, to no- tice and form profound abilities of Geographical analyze and integration. At the age of 95 years old, Emeritus Professor Doctor Docent


Ioan Șandru has shown us an impressive survey of all his scientific works and activities which ennobled an exceptional academic career: over 200 scientific works, 150 lectures and conveyances/scientific cir- cles in the country and abroad, 16 diplomas and distinctions from im- portant institutions in Romania and abroad, 38 doctoral dissertations’ guidance.


Professor Emeritus Doctor Docent Ioan Șandru has been a model to


follow from the point of view of soul independence, of scientific profoundness and longevity, but also of the absolute involvement in the national academic life.


He is the owner of many praiseworthy actions: in 1957 he founded “The National Committee of Geography” and in 1968 he reshaped “The Soci- ety of Geography” in Romania as an independent society and he encouraged the implementation of Geography as field of study in Secondary schools (1977); in 1964 he initiated “The National Colloquy of Population and Settle- ments Geography”, and in 1984 he appointed the tenth edition of geogra- phers, demographics, economists and architects participation from all over the country.


Out of the various scientific articles and works, some were published


in the magazines of Germany, France, the United States of America, Holland, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Brazil and Finland. Within external col- laborations he published works through he made Romania well-known all over the world: in “The Dutch Encyclopedia” (Zeist, 1961), “Il Milione Encyclo-
