he met new colleagues and he started the activity involved especially in the domain of huma and economic geography. Victor Tufescu accomplished his formation initially during the period of
his universitary training, at University of Iaşi, as geomorphologist, his doctoral thesis being entitled “Dealul Mare-Hârlău (observation upon landscape and human habitats evolution)”. This is a physical-geographical study which is also highlighting the prioritary human intervention fro the landscape remode- ling.
It is an original work of methodological, theoretical and practical interest
that is the base of the professor Victor Tufescu’s scientific preoccupations. Even since his work at the Academy of Economic Studies, he initiated a new direction of the economic geographical research. Victor Tufescu may be distinguished also by his published work, repre- senting rural maps and geographical atlases. His unique, remarkably recog- nized work has been “The physical geographical map of Romania”, first edited in 1959, and further re-edited constantly till present days. It is worth also to remember “The (scholar) Geographical Atlas” and es-
pecially the coordination and collaboration for the editing of the “National Geo- graphical Atlas” at the Romanian Academy (1973-1979). His vast work states for his complex activity, also for his contribution both in the domains of physical geography and human geography. Thogh his works do not contain the human geography terminology, they are aligned to this domainn of geography by they are aligned to this domain of geography by their contents. A good example is the synthesis work “Romania human- economy” appeared in 1974. The problems of human geography are approached in a series of stud-
ies dealing with urban geography, rural geography, population and systema- tics. Methodological standards may be considered the studies regarding the population migration as well as population density and structures. Personally, I especially appreciated his studies on the unity and func-
tions of our country and its population as essential patriotic element. It is worth to remember in this context the study published even since 1942 enti- tled “The role of Romania in the New Europe”. Professor Tufescu approached in this study the problems resulted from the transit position of Romania into the South-Eastern European, South Western Asian. These are prioritary prob- lems wich have been reported even since 1912, by the work of Aldem. Victor Tufescu evidenced by geographical consideration the fundamentals of Roma- nia position, especially through the role of Danube and Black Sea in the es- tablishment of the Romanian position regarding The Second World War previ- sions. It is remarkable scientific contribution of contemporary geographical applications especially by the integration into the European Union and exten- sion of the European Limits towards the Black Sea. It is an unique example that highlights the scientific preoccupations of the professor Tufescu also in the domain of political geography.
