Committee, editor-in-chief of the Romanian Academy’s geography journals and member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Geography of the Ro- manian Academy, Professor Victor Tufescu guided the geographical move- ment in this country throughout the 1990-2000 decade. His view on The Object of Geography is synthetically expressed in an


article written in 1999 (p. 31): “… the time has come to return to the concep- tion of Mehedinţi, which is fundamental to defining the relationships among geospheres, inclusive of the anthroposphere, in order to make the rightful ap- proach when proceeding to studying the environment and strive to preserve its equilibrium unaltered; and the more so, as it has been increasingly threat- ened of late by the excesses of the technological civilisation, or by the igno- rance of some human groupings who undertake large scale deforestation in warm areas, thereby causing deserts to expand the climates of the Earth to occur”.
