realization and not only its coordination or signing, as it is practiced some- times nowadays). The didactic activity of the professor at our University lasted five years, being suddenly interrupted, in the autumn of 1973 in an unfortunately context when, although he did not reached the age of 65 years old he was obliged to retire, in full creation power, proved in the years that followed. In the period when I was near the professor as assistant, I attended the seminars and practice works at his classes (“Geografia resurselor” and “Geografie economica a Ro- maniei”) classes to which I took part, but not how it is done today, in the dis- advantage of the young geographers who always have something to learn from the ones with experience. The discussions had an exemplary clarity, without useless details, unimportant ones, maintaining the attention of the audition along the entire exposure. It was presented, to us, the young men (the students of those years may testify) in its all splendor (this is an appropri- ate word) the erudition and science of teaching at the highest level in two an- thropogeography domains of great complexity (if you assume the role as mis- ter professor did). Those are the years when the professor conceived/realized the volume “Romania. Natura, om, economie” appeared in 1974 at the Editura Stiintifica and remained a checkpoint in the national geography. As his great predecessors (S. Mehedinti and G. Valsan)

the professor V. Tufescu shows

to Romanian geographers the true way to follow in the study of national reali- ties.

I do not know the undergrounds of the anticipated/forced retirement of

the professor but I remember the final lesson “of handing in of the baton”. The event happened in the lecture room G Valsan and after the first class thought professor V Tufescu, the professor I Popovici was presented to us, the one seemed adequate to take his place. I was not surprised hearing the young professor – who came close to the desk and said (not too much) words of gratitude to the one that “retired” – as he says “he will teach a class at least 20 years” (meaning until his retirement). I remembered this episode, unpleas- ant actually (taking into account the context) in the fall of 1983 (after 10 years) when I accompanied on his last journey the man who wanted so much to teach one of the most important classes of our section. The One from above thought differently… The teacher endured stoically (I have no idea what was then in his

soul) this passing on a “secondary line” as well as those situations that peri- odically bitter his life, among which the so called problem of the past (pre - communist) problem that “deserved” – in the eyes of some party teachers from our faculty – to be debated in the audiences from those times. The pro- fessor continued with serenity and dedication (as much as the new situation of retired person let him) to be present to all other activities of the department, as consultant professor, guiding many post – graduates to beautiful realiza- tions.
