fessor. I am convinced that them also, on their turn, keep in mind these words that evidence the wound, still open, from the body of our country. The villainy of the Prut as an unnatural border that separates Romani- ans from Romanian appeared in another context also, one evening at a dis- cussion with the people that lived there. I found out how, in one winter, one of the village people, “in a merry mood” passed the frozen Prut and visited his siter, now, a Soviet citizen in the near village. She, after seeing him unexpect- edly had to report the situation to the local Soviet organisms who – instead of sending him back to where he came from (o few hundred meters) – began to put him questions and then “repatriated” him after two days through the bror- der point from Sculeni (about 80 km!). We were amused by the situation and also we saddened (the professor more than us). The bridges “of flowers” from the fall of 1991 seemed that they will lead in history the border on Prut but, as we know it, this did not happen! I observed the extraordinary ability of the professor in the approach of


technical problems, practices related to the placement of the dam in a cal- careous sector, in the evidencing of the dynamic of slopes and the course of Prut, with barriers that influenced the route of the border (along the water). All these constituted for me a true lesson of applied geography accompanied by the proof of the appreciation of our companions – engineers, geologist - over the meaning and role of the geographer in the territorial arrangement. Back to Botosani, I met other side of the professor’s personality, that of father, family man. I took Razvan, my older boy (he then had five years) and sat in the same hotel room with the professor. I accustomed Razvan with reading, every night a story from a newly appeared volume. We read them one at a time, every evening but one evening when we reached a longer story (called “Podul din Londra”) I began to read it all (there were about 14 pages!) believing that I would disturb (by keeping the lights on) the professor. Then, he, knowing the reason of my sudden stop – the text was becoming more and more interesting but “intolerable long” – took the book and continued reading until the very end – under the eyes full of attention and delight of my son – but also for my great embarrassment especially after he told me with his kind but severe voice that “the promise made must be kept, especially in front of children!”. A life lesson that I tried to apply over the years in different situations. The presence in the home town of the professor became a true lesson


of urban geography, with the evidencing of the elements specific to dynamics of the city on Sitna, with an industry still at the beginning, with the vestiges still present belonging to the Jewish community, with a remarkable cultural life for a province town, about whose past (from his childhood and youth) told me with so much warmth.


The paper dedicated to the valley of Prut was realized and handed in


to our beneficiaries (the Surveillance Group for Investments from Iasi) and it was very appreciated (because of the total involvement of the professor in its
