ANNIVERSARY PROFESSOR IOAN ȘANDRU


HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE ROMANIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY


Nicu I. AUR Spiru Haret University, Bucharest Distinctive and well-thought-of figure in Romanian Geography field, a


great professor and scientist who established a genuine and veritable Human Geography School, developing his activity with the view of increasing/ promoting a new ideology for over 70 years, who showed interest in forming his various followers and who gained admiration and appreciation on behalf of all those who knew him through all his actions. He was born on 22 July 1913, in the former village of Poiana Sarata, Bacau County, from Transylvanian natives. He proved to be a very hard- working pupil, and that is why the Elementary School graduating him with honors; afterwards he studied at the Secondary School in Sf. Gheorghe, Tg. Secuiesc and then in Gheorgheni and Brasov County (“Dr. Ioan Mesota” Sec- ondary school) where he earned prizes and he passed his school-leaving ex- amination with honors. The school-leaving certificate/diploma entitled its holder to enroll at the University of Foreign Languages and Literatures and Philosophy (1932-1936) in Bucharest, graduating it also “cum laude”. In 1934, the intellectuals and other individuals, who were participating in a conference held by professor Simion Mehedinti, asked him to entrust a subject to a student who was born in that village, for his thesis, namely “The Valley of Oituz – Geographic Study” with the end in view of aiding the reconstruction of villages. Simion Mehedinti entrusted this subject to Ioan Șandru and he was concerned about the stu- dent’s grounding between 1934 and 1936. From 1937 until 1943, Ioan Șandru taught Geography at “Eudoxiu Hur- muzachi” Secondary school in Radauti, and the headmaster of this institution wrote in a letter of recommendation: “…he absolutely denoted the fact that he was a capable, well-trained and hard-working person and he came off with flying colors of all legal obligations and duties”. In 1943 he was transferred as tutor at “Al. I. Cuza” University in Iasi. In 1949 he took his doctor degree “magna cum laude” in Geography at “C. Par- hon” University, his mentor being Vintila Mihailescu. He followed all educational levels at “Al. Ioan Cuza” University in Iasi:
