RESEARCH DIRECTIONS REGARDING THE EVOLUTION OF THE PRACTICAL APPLICATIVE CONTENT OF GEOGRAPHY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CRAIOVA
Viorica TOMESCU University of Craiova
Geography appeared and developed due to certain practical necessi-
ties linked to the satisfaction of the knowledge aspiration people have always manifested. Presently, when the development of economy, science, and tech- nique has led to the intensification of the action of the sociosystem upon the geosystem, there appears a series of dysfunctions that can endanger the bal- ance of the two systems and of their interaction.
Thus, modern Geography, as well as other sciences, comprises multi- ple problems, a diversification on branches that study the connection nature- human being, which is concretized in the global environment, but it also makes reference to the concrete local and regional space where environ- mental issues with all their features can be studied. Besides the theoretical character, Geography is presently involved in
the study of many practical issues, as it supports the documentation for nu- merous projects, such as the ones linked to the territorial planning, where the field data gathered by direct or indirect (satellite images) geographical re- search are used. In order to strengthen this idea, we underline the conclusions stipu-
lated by some well-known geographers with regard to the importance of the practical-applicative content of Geography, among which we mention: Petre V. Coteţ underlined that “Geography is a theoretical, as well as a practical sci- ence” and Michel Philipponeau stated that “all the specialized branches of Geography are susceptible to make room for applicative research”. At the same time, he also mentioned the theoretical importance of the applicative research as “applied papers present a considerable interest for the perfection of our Geography knowledge”. I. Donisă says that “any geographical study that offers scientific knowledge about the sociosystem or about some of its components can have, sooner or later, a practical applicability and serve to the documentation of a human activity”. According to J. Beaujeu-Garnier “there are not two geographies, one for the erudites and for the ones who are studying and one for the planners and businessmen. Any good geographical study is susceptible to bring infor- mation, so to be usable” and it is not about a new branch, but, more about a
