development perspective by the authorities (Alunisul, Barda, Bobaita etc.). The lack of perspective is first determined by the natural degradation of the demographic potential, which in some villages is under 10 inhabitants and a high index of demographic aging. Although other villages have seen the same decrease, they might regain their balance by supporting some economic activities which meant to stabilize the young population (Borogea, Cragugesti, Ilovat, etc.).

Several villages, which in determinated social-economic conditions

encountered an increase of the habitant number, have a generally descendant multianual evolution; it is about the pronatalist politics of the comunist system. In this category take part the villages: Bădiţeşti, Bala, 23 August, Brateşul, Brativoieşti, Braţa, Budăneşti, Cărămidaru, Cârşu, Căzăneşti, Celnata, Cernaia, Cerveniţa, Ciovârnăşani, Cocorova, Colibaşi, Comăneşti, Cotoroaia, Crainici, Cremenea, Şişeşti, Şovarna. The sizing of the rural habitat from the studied area is determined by a

concurrence of factors, from which the most important are the social-historic and economic ones. The developement of the settlements on size categories shows the way in which the demographic components interact with the environment. For a more insightful analysis we studied the next figures: under 250, 250, 251-500, 501-750, 751-1000, 1001-1500, over 1501 habitants. At the 1912 census, 3% of the settlements had a population under 250

habitants, from which a township capital- Floresti. In the same category were included a series of villages like: Măru Roşu, Croica, Prunaru, Jigniţa, Peşteana. In the 251-500 category were included 35.7 of the settlements from which two township capitals: Husnicioara and Cazanesti. In both categories we noticed periferic settlements reported to the townships capitals. The 501- 1000 category comprises 24% of the settlements from which townships capitals and villages with a high local potential: Ciovârnăşani, Corcova, Broşteni, Prunişor, Voloiac, Zegujani etc. In the 1001-1500 category

are

included 12% of the rural settlements which are the most favoured from the local potential and geographical point of view. Only Sovarna Village registered over 1501 habitants, a village which

represented and still is a local center of polarization, for the Cosustea hills as well as for the Plateau of Mehedinti. The 1930 census does not mention 26 villages, which will enter in the

componence of other rural settlements. Most of them had under 250 habitants, except for Comanda and Ciocuta villages (which are part of Strehaia city) and which had over 1000 habitants each. Anyway, those two were not able to refresh (revigorate) the other ones, many of them falled into a demographic decline. Due to this administrative intervention only 10,1% of the settlements have under 250 habitants . The 251-500 category includes 29.1% of the settlements. The evolution of some settlements which from the first category (under 250) reached to

the 251-500 category (Suharu and 144 Măru Roşu) is
