particular orientation of certain papers, either by choosing the themes or by the manner they are treated. There can be added other examples, as well. It started from this imperative of the modern Geography in order to be
a permanent urge to continue the research according to the present and more complex requirements of the environment we live in, which is characterized by an increasing dynamics. In order to perform applicative studies, the geogra- phers have to be correspondingly trained, to have adequate knowledge for approaching the signaled issues and for elaborating viable analyses able to support the projected actions.
The numerous papers and the research projects (contacts/grants) elaborated by well-known and by young geographers, they all reflect the di- mension of the new necessities, as everybody wants to find the most ade- quate solutions able to ensure the harmony man-nature. The results obtained by the members of the Geography Department of the University of Craiova follow the same direction from the didactic and re- search points of view. We shall refer only to the papers that have already been published or are to be published and the subject of which is Oltenia – one of the important regions of the country, where the environment compo- nents represented essential elements of analysis and territorial planning. They belong to the category regional geography studies considered by J. Beaujeu-Garnier (1971) “as a science of the complex concrete space, result of the interconditioning of the natural environment and human environment, which distinguishes through proper indexes and reflects especially the land utilization way”.
Thus, we mention the works referring to the hydrographical system of
Oltenia: The Water within the Oltenia Plain (1998), Universitaria Craiova Pub- lishing House, Lakes and Wet Areas (2003), the same publishing house, au- thor Vasile Pleniceanu; Theoretical and Practical Hydrology of Rivers (2001) Reprograph Publishing House, The Rivers of Oltenia – hydrological phenom- ena of exceptional risk (2003), The Underground Water within Craiova Area (2001), Universitaria Craiova Publishing House, author Constantin Savin. Re- cently, it has been finalized the study entitled Hydrological Hazards Induced by Floods within the Jiu Catchment Area, which represents the Ph. D. paper work elaborated by Cornel Golea.
The objectives followed in the above-mentioned papers stressed the
evaluation of the hydrological risk within the catchment area of the Jiu, of the Desnăţui, and of the Danube along the Oltenia sector. The studies regarding the hydrological elements and the vulnerability of the hydrometeorological in- dices within Oltenia led to essential proposals for the rearrangement of the geographical space, for the impel of the works meant to correctly set the flow levels and the major discharges registered in 1970, 1972, 1989, 1991, 2002, and 2006. There have been achieved maps rendering the hydrological risks on degrees and types, on natural and associated man-induced phenomena (with the concrete study within area affected by heavy rains, by the active
