VICTOR TUFESCU - PROFESSOR AT ACADEMY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES
Silviu NEGUȚ
Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest This year, Academy of Economic Studies (previously named Academy
of High Commercial and Industrial Studies), the only exclusive economic uni- versity from Romania celebrates 95 years since its foundation. This means 95 years of teaching Geography in this university and chronologically ranks Academy of Economic Studies on the second place, after University of Bu- charest (1900). Amongst many geographers that have taught in this prestig- ious high education institution, Professor Victor Tufescu has always remarked himself (between 1941-1946) alongside Nicolae Al. Rădulescu (1905-1989)- another famous professor and geographer. Before teaching in a high education institute, Victor Tufescu was be- tween 1935-1938 a high school teacher in Braşov- almost a rule in that period in Romania- at the traditionally Dr. Meşotă High school. He stopped teaching in 1936 because he had to transfer at “Vemiamin” Theological Seminar in Iaşi, in order to facilitate the completion and presentation of his PhD thesis. After obtaining a scholarship at Sorbonne, he was a professor at Bucharest Normal Superior School (presently known as “I.L. Caragiale ” college), school that has a post academic rank. He was named in 1941 associate assistant professor and in 1946 when N. Al Rădulescu moved at University of Bucharest, he became a full professor and Head of the Geography Department in AHCIS. The professor started his university career during an unfavourable period, the World War II, and continued in a sovietized Romania, where there was major political interference, not only in the high education system, but mainly in the economic environment. His university career to whom he dedicated all his passions and skills,
being considered „the right person at the right time”, will be brutally stopped for 5 years (1951-1956) when he was forced to work as a designer at the Bucharest Institute for Forest Projections. Unfortunatelly, during this time he was arrested and put in prison for 9 months (november 1955-july 1956). Returning in 1956 in Academy of Economic Studies (which changed its name to „V.I.Lenin Institute”) Victor Tufescu continued to teach until 1968 when he moved to University of Bucharest and became professor and Head of Depart- ment at Faculty of Geography and Geology (section Geography).
