Tourist Boards Tourist boards usually have head offices based in their own countries and offices around the world. Roles include marketing, communications and business develop- ment. Many overseas tourist boards employ a company to represent them in the UK. They usually have a director that oversees planning, marketing, budgets and diplo- matic relations, and staff handing PR, trade and consumer activities.

Web Developers and Designers Web developers usually have a computer science or IT background and are the people who build and maintain a website. This is a highly specialised area and roles usually involve knowledge of code and website infrastructure programmes. There are specialist technology companies that build websites and distribution systems for travel companies. Web designers tend to come from a background in graphic design and will focus on the visual aspect, which includes the layout, colouring and typography of a web page. Web devel- opers and designers need to work very closely together, and increasingly need to ensure content is equally accessible on desktop devices, tablets and smartphones.

Content Producer The person in this role produces the pic- tures, video and words on a website. As well as being creative and a good writer, producers need to make sure the site is

frequently updated and that the content is optimised for search engines. Businesses recognise that having compelling content on their website is a good way of increas- ing the amount of time users spend on it.

Search People who work in this area make sure that when holidays are searched online their company’s website appears as high as possible on the search results. There are two main types of search: pay-per-click (PPC) and natural search. PPC roles are popular and the function is usually the biggest driver of online business and sales.

Ashley Seward, 17, is studying Level 2 Travel

and Tourism at Coleg Llandrillo in North Wales “The course involved a residential study visit to the Algarve where we shadowed and worked alongside representatives from Thomson. I held a welcome meeting and a transfer speech, and my confidence has grown. This

experience encouraged me to follow a career path leading to a job as a resort rep. I was offered a job, which I had to turn down due to college commitments, although I do aim to fly out next summer.”
