Tamara Edwards is on the IT Graduate Scheme at Tui Travel. She studied Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, which included a Professional Training Year (PTY) at London’s Park Plaza County Hall Hotel “My PTY in the hotel was the most important year of my degree, providing me with the knowledge and experience I needed to secure a job within the tourism industry. The industry is service driven and it is so important to understand the needs and expectations of your customers. The only way to truly understand is to be at the forefront and to interact with customers, which is what my place- ment gave me the opportunity to do. As well as enhancing my customer service skills, the year also taught me to be resilient and dynamic in order to adapt to all the different situations you can face when providing a service. I had the opportunity to manage projects, which improved my organisa- tional, leadership and time management skills. I also learnt the importance of effective communi- cation and networking, which provided me with the invaluable knowledge I now use every day in my new role at Tui Travel.”
Lauren Holmes a travel advisor with Thomson Holidays studied a Travel and Tourism course at Leeds City College “I’ve always had an interest in the travel industry and when I looked into the two-year course, I felt like it was the best option for me. I joined the col- lege straight from school and really enjoyed my time there, getting a real insight into all aspects of the industry. It made me realise there was so much more to it than I initially thought. I particularly enjoyed the overseas opportunities, in particular a 10-week work placement at a Spanish hotel, which gave me valuable hands-on experience and independence. I grew in confidence with the help of tutors, who were extremely supportive, which was invaluable when it came to going for job interviews. After college I secured a retail ap- prenticeship with Thomson Holidays and now work as a travel advisor at a Leeds branch. My college course has really helped me with my job, espe- cially the knowledge I picked up from the various destinations I visited. And though I haven’t quite lost the travelling bug, I enjoy being kept busy and helping others to plan their travels.”
