One of the most common and well-known roles in the industry, agents usually work in a high-street or online travel agency selling holidays put together by a tour operator, or increasingly, one they have tailor-made themselves. Most agency staff have sales targets, which might include selling a particular operator. In a small agency staff can get involved in other areas such as marketing or window displays. Within the agency there are different management tiers. Managers look after the sales force within a branch or region. Often at branch level, they also sell holidays themselves. Call Centres Working in a call centre requires staff to support the customer through every stage, from helping them choose where to go on holiday to resolving any complaints either in resort or on their return. There are different levels of staff, from reservations staff through to team leaders and call centre managers. Call centres often have a target-based culture, with staff having to sell certain amounts or take a minimum number of calls.
Homeworkers Offering the independence of building your own customer base and the back-up of a company offering support such as IT and marketing, many sales staff in the industry work from home, even though they’re employed or franchised with a bigger company. Most homeworkers have had experience in a shop or office first.
Reservations Staff Reservations staff – whether they work for a tour operator, cruise line or airline – make the actual booking for the customer. They have to have excellent attention to detail and knowledge of the product they are booking, for example airport codes.
Business Travel These roles are responsible for en- suring people travelling on business have a smooth and cost-efficient journey. Staff usually work for a specialist agency called a travel management company and are often assigned to one particular client. Big, global companies will have whole teams looking after
