Many companies offer on-the-job training through internships, apprenticeships or graduate trainee schemes, and also work with specialist training companies to provide product training. On pages 66-105, the

‘Showcase’ section focuses on 20 of the best travel firms in the UK for training and development of staff. And you can look out

for the following official schemes which many companies will offer to help your career progress.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are jobs that enable you to earn while you learn. The benefits are that you’ll get a qualification that

employers value; you’ll get on-the-job training from skilled and knowledgeable professionals; and you’ll get the opportunity to work alongside experienced colleagues. There are a number of

apprenticeships in leisure, travel and tourism, with apprenticeship standards developed by employer- led Trailblazers made up of leading employers and professional bodies. Apprenticeship

vacancies are advertised at apprenticeships.org. uk, and information about apprenticeships in the UK can be found as follows: Wales: careerswales.com; Northern Ireland: nidirect. gov.uk/apprenticeships; Scotland: tinyurl.com/ skillsscotland

Graduate trainee schemes Graduate schemes enable students to get a foothold on the career ladder while enabling them to showcase the skills that show they have leadership potential. Schemes typically last at least a year and in that time graduates will rotate between departments within an organisation so that they get an overview of how the business operates. They may be asked to complete projects as part of the scheme.

Internships Internships are extended periods of work experience during which potential

employees can gain hands-on experience. These can last any dura- tion but are typically three months. Internships enable potential employees to prove themselves. They are usually unpaid, but expenses may be covered.

Vocational qualifications Qualifications that can be taken while you are working, but aren’t part of a formal training scheme, are invaluable. And training should carry on throughout your career. A number of organisations provide on-the-job learning, from tourist boards running online training to courses that teach you how to use the latest booking technology.
