case study
Karen joined
Barrhead Travel early in her travel
career, as a leisure travel consultant. At the time, it employed 25 people in one branch in Glasgow. “Even in those days, it
was clear the company was going to keep getting bigger, and that’s what attracted me,” says Karen. Little did she know
says. “Skills can be taught, but what’s most important to us is that someone is genuinely interested in learning, developing and contributing to the business.” Having started as a
Saturday girl with the company, Sharon knows from personal experience the value of investing time and money in employees. “I get real pleasure from introducing
the younger generation to the company and to the exciting world of travel – that’s why we take on a large number of Modern Apprentices and graduates each year. They bring new ideas and help us to keep moving the company forward.” Barrhead Travel has made sure that there are training and development programmes in place that allow employees to move
forward at their own pace. “Some people are ambitious and keen to go as far as they can, while others are happy to remain at a certain level,” says Sharon. “The great thing about
working for Barrhead Travel is that it’s entirely your choice, because the company is large enough, and successful enough, to accommodate
everyone’s wishes.”
how high she’d be able to climb in the company. “I became manager of our first call centre within the first year. I learned along the way and always had new challenges to overcome. It was never boring!” Karen laughs. In 2007, Karen became
director of sales, a role that she relishes. “It’s a huge responsibility as the business will turn over about £300 million this year, but it’s my ideal role. I’m really grateful for the opportunities and development I’ve been given at Barrhead Travel.”
